Birth photography is all about documenting the moments leading up to a birth and then meeting that little one for the first time.  The birth of a child can be a blur when you think back to the day.  As a mom that has given birth I can tell you how the gift of a photographer was the most important thing to me.  In labor I was in my own world, contracting and not paying attention to those around me.  Had it not been for the photographer I wouldn’t have seen how those in my birth team supported me, or all the things that my husband did to help ease the pain in anyway that he could.  I wouldn’t see the emotion on all of our faces as I labored and delivered an amazing little boy.  I was so tired afterwards all I wanted to do was sleep and only a few days later couldn’t recall so much that had happened the day of my son’s birth.  But I have the photos.  I have the awe on Cody’s face as he becomes a new dad.  The reactions of everyone as they met Axle for the first time.  That was not only an important day for Axle, but it was a life changing day for myself.  I became a mom.  In that moment my view on life and how I handle it changed.  I became a woman that felt empowered and strong.  I gave birth, and that’s not easy.

First I will call you!  I LOVE talking and getting to know you and hear your journey becoming a mom and/or dad. We will then set a date to meet in person at either your local coffee shop (I really love hole in the wall comfy coffee shops) or Starbucks near you.  This way we can get to know one another, answer and ask questions.   I want us to get to know each other and have a relationship so that you feel more at ease with me at your birth.  I am on call for 4 weeks- 2 weeks before your due date and two weeks after.  On -call for me means that I will stay within a 30 mile radius of my home.  My bags are packed at all times.  (more information about what on-call looks like here)

Once I get the call that your labor has started I head over.(This is normally around 6cm).  I’m with you until the end.  I will shoot your labor, the birth, newborn screening, herbal bath, or anything else that happens the day of.  We will capture the real, raw, 100% unscripted moments of your birth story through photography and/or film.

The Postpartum Story

When the house is quiet and all have left your home.  You are faced with your first night alone with your sweet bundle of joy.  I will be there capturing the first nights as a family with a new baby.  This is the true newborn photography, the real everyday moments.   The beauty and the struggles of those first few nights/days.  This is real and raw at the most life changing moments of your life.  I take this trust very seriously as I truly feel that the postpartum story is important to document.  The days that are the most foggiest in our mind of new moms.  Looking back with each of my children the first 3 months were a blur. Our babies grow so much, so fast.   The Postpartum Story has helped me personally as I take self portraits during moments in which I feel overwhelmed.  Above you will see photographs of myself at my most vulnerable moments. The 2/3am feeding, first week and in depends, overwhelming utter exhaustion.  The beauty in the fog.  These moments I will never get back, that tiny baby in the first week was so much bigger even in week two.  Learning to juggle a new addition into the family and saying "yes... I embrace tv time now, even though I have been so against it in the past".  You learn what works for you through your trails of motherhood and guess what?  No one else has it all figured out either.  Just breath, and know your in a safe place with a non judgment free zone.

You have the option to choose your first three (three nights and two day), two (two nights and one day), or just the first night.  There is also the option to buy "hours".  For example you can buy a bundle of 6 or 45 hours and let me know when you would like to use them in your 3 months postpartum period.  I am also working with extended postpartum up until 3 years of age, if this speaks to you and you are no longer in your fourth trimester (3 months after birth) please still contact me.

Did you know?

Postpartum can last as long as 3 years after brith. Also, your body is not said to be fully healed from carrying and delivering your baby until they are two years old age.

   HELLO BABY (Fresh 48)

The Hello Baby sessions capture what life is like in the first days of your baby’s life.  I’ll come back either to your home or the hospital for a 2-3hr session and take photos of those that come to visit the little one.  This way you can rest from the day before, but you get photos of those early moments..  I’ll also make pictures of you and your family, your reactions to the new little one and how life is with a one day old little love.  If you had a baby at home or at a birth center then you most likely are already home and I stay another 1-2hrs and just show what it's like to have a newborn at home.  Those first moments, the love, the panic and the diaper changing battles.  This is a great way of getting those Fresh 48 pictures but have the time to rest and prep before hand.   A lot of my families love the Hello Baby Story for coming home from the NICU like the above photographs or an adoption coming home story.  I love calling it, Hello Baby, because it is truly about the first 48hrs you are saying hello to your baby.  However and whenever they join your family.

The Hello Baby interview documentary sessions are a great option families wanting to capture life within the first 48hrs but with a little spin.  These session are filmed and happen within the first 48hrs either at the hospital or at home.  You will be interviewed about your birth and the experience while it is still fresh in your mind.  This gives you not only the amazing moments of a fresh 48, but the story that goes with it.  These videos will be given to you on a custom USB, along with an online sharing option for family and friends to view.
